Note #1…I do not use IEM’s (In Ear Monitors) so one has to know whether or not their particular IEM’s match with the 3 Ohm Output Impedance of the AK120.

Note #2…You will notice that the AK120 was not modified (for lower output impedance) as I did with the AK100.  The reason I chose not to modify is because I wanted to use a stock AK120 player…so others could hear what I was hearing if they so choose.

Here Is a link to the Spec Sheet for the AK120 (PDF Opens New Tab).

Disclaimer:  As you know this site is not here to sell anyone anything, so I must disclose that the Pono Player was given to me, as I was an early stage beta tester.  I did not know I was going to be asked to be a beta tester nor did I know that we would be able to keep the player after testing was completed.  More on that another time…I will say that whatever you have read, the people behind Pono are well intentioned.  They created a damn good DAP…all criticisms aside, they really were and are (in the end) just trying to move Hirez forward.  This is a win for all.  The Pono Player will not be a main feature in reviews…I just wanted to let people know my source DAP’s for info.

As Far as the other DAP’s:

Some quick thoughts that might be helpful.  I never use the bundled software with the DAP units.  You want headaches…then use the software.  I simply use the DAP’s as default external drives, when plugged into the computer, just drag and drop my music files / folders into the onboard flash or memory cards.  I fill the memory cards by using the adaptor that comes with the cards and do the heavy transferring of music files via the memory card slot on the computer.

Another helpful hint, with the exception of the Pono Player which automatically scans my it’s memory at startup, I never ever ever scan my AK120 DAP…there is no need for me to do so.  I turn automatic scanning off on the AK120 and just remember where I put the files.  I just organize the folders in a way that makes it pretty simple to navigate.  On occasion it will take a minute or two to find something but it’s not a burden.

I don’t listen the way most people do…I do not use playlists, I tag my own files with mp3 Tag freeware, I listen to full albums (except for maybe electronic).  Every time I listen to an album I try to listen for something I never heard before, and every time…no matter how many listens, it presents itself.  I’m not trying to tell anyone how to listen to their music but I see people giving excellent DAP’s a bad review because the software was buggy, or they fill their memory cards with hundreds of GB of music while in the DAPs’ expansion slots.  Sometimes the GUI in the player itself is a little glitchy, but never miserable unless you’re expecting iPhone fast.

I Have had the AK120 for 2 years now and I use it daily with no battery issues…recharge is  slow, just plug in at night and it’s ready to go the next morning.  I do not use the DAP’s continuously all day, I switch between the phone to DAP’s throughout the day and they just work.  A little clunky but sounds damn good enough to make up for any shortfalls.

The Beatles – “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” The Ultimate Review: My Process ~ Vinyls Vs. Digitals W/ Mono And Stereo Love!…Part #2 [2 UPDATES]

The Beatles – “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band” The Ultimate Review: My Process ~ Vinyls Vs. Digitals W/ Mono And Stereo Love!…Part #2

The following preamble will be present at the beginning of all reviews and is subject to change as things evolve.

Our reviews will not be the normal kind of review that you usually see about an artist release. These will be different as we will be aggregating all sources available …320kbps(Lossy Audio taken from the CD FLAC Rip), CD (EAC Lossless 16Bit/44.1kHzpepper_f header Rip), HD Tracks (Hi-Res Digital Downloads from 24/96 to 24/192), 24/48 ALAC Hi-Res Apple Lossless, Vinyl Rips (Often from different countries & catalogs transferred by different rippers with different set-ups), as well as other high quality sources as the become available such as Pono music. That’s not to say I will not add any subjective commentary(I’ll be open as to what I like and do not) but I will try to remain as objective as possible. As we know music listening is a very subjective, or personal experience, therefore I will try to stick best with theory to give you what I believe is the best format to own of any given release.

**14 If there is a track 14 listed for a specific release it just means the end “Runout Sounds” have been made into a separate track from the end of Track #13.

I’ve decided that the best way to parse out the best vinyl, I will first do a list of all the vinyl worthy of representation. Then proceed to eliminate different but identical pressing vinyl releases according to their rank in quality. Sometimes two copies of the same pressing will make the cut even if they are transferred at different Bit Depths / Sampling Rates because of my desire for that particular setup’s sound signature, with an emphasis on the cartridge or signal chain used. So here is the best of the best lists:

Sgt Pepper’s Mono Vinyl:

Round 1:
I have weeded out a lot of the other mono vinyl rips because they just did not meet the standards of the releases posted below. As you can see it is pretty much between the best copy of the Japanese Red Wax Mono and The Original UK Mono. The stereo vinyl when we get to it, as you will see, not so simple.

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967/1982 Reissue) [VINYL] (Japanese Red Wax Mono)  Vinyl Rip >Transferred to 16Bit/44.1kHz Lossless FLAC\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper(1967) (Japan Red Wax Mono)  UltMstr Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 16Bit/44.1kHz Lossless FLAC\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) [VINYL] (UK Mono Original) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to16Bit/44.1kHz Lossless FLAC\

  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Red Wax Mono) Ans2TheMstr Vinyl Rip > transferred to 24Bit/48kHz ALAC .MP4 [Hi-Rez]\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band [UK mono] 1967 UK Parlophone ( PMC 7027) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper(1967/1982 Reissue) (Japan Red Wax Mono) 2011 UltMstr Vinyl Rip  Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

Round 2:

  • Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Red Wax Mono) Ans2TheMstr Vinyl Rip > transferred to 24Bit/48kHz ALAC .MP4 [Hi-Rez]\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper(1967/1982 Reissue) (Japan Red Wax Mono) 2011 UltMstr Vinyl Rip  Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) [VINYL] (UK Mono Original) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to16Bit/44.1kHz Lossless FLAC\

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band [UK mono] 1967 UK Parlophone (PMC 7027) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

Round 3:
It’s between these two one in Hi-Res and One in Red Book and they both make the cut to move on to compete against the stereo vinyl versions. Both sound amazing and both have different qualities that make them rise to the top.

#1.

  • The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper(1967/1982 Reissue) (Japan Red Wax Mono) 2011 UltMstr Vinyl Rip  Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

Official DR value:    DR11

http://www.discogs.com/Beatles-Sgt-Peppers-Lonely-Hearts-Club-Band/release/4451664

This release is just amazing, I do believe it comes in second after a excellent condition Original 1967 UK Mono Pressing but this release is highly recommended. Excellent detail…no artificial hard panning like the stereo releases. It has great sound stage and as I’ve said you forget your listening to mono.

This release right here is the holy grail of Mono…this is the original, and if you can find a mint pressing this is the mono you want. The Japan Red Wax mono is very close, I just find this pressing to have an amazing warmth to it. Who knows maybe I’m biased as it is the “way it was meant to be heard” but this has just as good sound at 16Bit/44.1kHz as the Hi-Res Japan Mono at 24Bit/96kHz.

  • This is the best pressing of all the “stereo cuts” that I have reviewed. It is so detailed, excellent sound, dynamic, breathes, it’s warm and silky smooth!

  • This 1967 pressing – original release is quite good but not as good as the tube cut. It’s a little too warm for my ears and slightly more neutral and flat. Less controlled punch as well but I’m digging here for criticism as it is still an excellent pressing and highly recommended.

This Pepper’s is extremely bright/ top heavy, sounds clinical, and sterile…I believe that it is still better than the 2009 remaster stereo CD but that’s not saying much. I do not  recommend.

The Beatles – Sgt Pepper – (1967) (2012 Parlophone EU remaster) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

This 2012 EU is sourced from the 2009 Digital Remasters and just by being pressed to vinyl…finally a 2009/2012 sourced remaster excels in all areas over the 24Bit/44.1 USB Key and The 2009 Stereo CD which to my ears is a poor CD pressing.

There were a lot of pressing issues for the 2012 US and EU vinyl releases…more for the US and less for the EU. The Pepper’s EU is spectacular if you get a good pressing so listen to it right away to find out. I would recommend this release highly if you get a good pressing.

  • The Beatles – Sgt. P’s L H C B (1967) (UHQR)  FnlMstr FMV-NC Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\
  • Again this is an excellent pressing, to be specific I would say that it’s not as bright as the regular MFSL but it is on the bright side for my ears but not overbearing. This sounds amazing from the speakers. The brightness for me comes through in headphones. So this has top dynamics and detail. It breathes rather well. Excellent sound stage and stereo image. There’s not much to complain about on this pressing as well. Highly recommended!

Round 4:

Eliminated From Round #3

  • Release # 3 The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) [VINYL] (MFSL 1-100)1999 Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\
  • Official DR value:    DR13
  • Disc 8 of 14 disc Mobile Fidelity “Beatles Collection” box set, JVC Japan “SuperVinyl” / MFSL 1-100 ~Half-Speed Mastered by Stan Ricker @ MFSL, Los Angeles
  • The MFSL was eliminated because it is way to “Bright” for my ears. The sound quality in many areas such as transparency, Dynamics, and detail are OK, it’s just too bright for me. If you subjectively like super bright then you will love this. This is the only pressing of the top 5 stereo’s that did not make  the cut. All four others make it into the category ~ “The Best Of The Best”!

Round 5: “The Best of The Best” and total rankings of all the Vinyl as well as all the digitals and CD’s.

TOTAL 5+ RANKINGS:

#1 : THREEWAYTie for The Best Of The Best\

#3 : Tie for The Best Of The Best\

Even though they both have different sound signatures…I could not decide which of these two stereo pressings is better. I think I lean toward the EU 2012 Digital remaster pressing which has amazing clarity and detail, the 1967 original UK press BC-10 Solid State Cut has amazing warmth.

#4 in Stereo Section ~ The Beatles – Sgt Pepper – (1967) (2012 Parlophone EU remaster) Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 24Bit/96kHz Lossless Flac [HI-RES]\

#2 in Stereo Section ~ The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) (BC-13) (UK STEREO BC-13 SOLID STATE CUT) 2010 Vinyl Rip > Transferred to 16Bit/44.1kHz Lossless FLAC\

#4 : The Best Of The Best\

All the vinyl ranked highest as you can see, this is where other formats come in and they start out stunning and quickly plunge into the “poor” range. This 2009 Remaster CD Release takes the number 4 position in a big way.

In The CD Section from Part 1 ~ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2009 Mono Remaster) (True) Mono CD Remaster, CD8-1 – CD8-13

#5 : The Best Of The Best\

Here comes the next best of the 2009 remasters (This position includes both limited and de-limited versions)…

In The Digital Section from Part 1 ~ The 2009 Remasters Limited Edition Stereo USB Key 24Bit/kHz44.1

#6 : The Mediocre\

Here comes the worst of the 2009 remasters…

In The Digital Section from Part 1 ~ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (2009 Stereo Remaster CD), CD8-1 – CD8-13

What’s Your Digital Legacy? Make Them Smile In Your Virtual Life….[Updated~Edit]

I have already described what the Christmachine Audio Reference Music Server is, BJPq2MhCYAAP6grboth in general and In-Depth in other pieces here. The third important dimension is that of a digital legacy.

Not to bum anyone out, but this should be important to us all, and that is what we leave for a “Digital legacy” when the time comes. Again this is not meant to be depressing…I face these kinds of things head on and like to think that I would leave some record that would put a smile on my loved ones faces when my time has come.

If you think for a minute, especially if something should happen to us unexpectedly, we hopefully leave others with good memories. The other side of this thinking process is that we leave a footprint online as well as a computer, externals, and a cloud that would have a lot of our private information. Be that as it may, as I think about this what would people learn about me that they might not fully know. Well the main thing for LkhkLme would be my passion for music and cinema ….not just a little passion but everything archived that would take someone 10 years to sift through. That is exciting to me because my Digital Legacy both here and in storage, I imagine would be quite a gas. I know what you’re thinking, ‘what makes you think others would find all my junk interesting’. I can’t say for sure but as you will see in due time that I have a lot of “war stories” which could not possibly be made up.

The website here at christmachine.com is my way of sorting out that “junk” for others to get a better understanding of my life. I like to say that I’ve lived three lives in the half I already have in this one. Further I also like to say that I have a few books worth of stories that would blow people’s mind and I’m not even famous, nor would I want to be. Traveling the world, tours, 900x900px-LL-ec46007a_3786601324_e96b6a3bf7_oexperiences, we all have them but here I can do that uncensored and to the best of my memory…I may forget a few small details but when did a person let truth get in the way of a good story.

Another thing is that I’ve always been good at writing when I keep it up…in the last several years after University I have let that stagnate and wither a bit. That is the reason some of my articles here meander and lose their way a bit. The more that I write, the better my writing will be, for many of us that is the case. Organizing my time to keep this blog filled with good content is also a good type of stress, I feel myself getting better at it every day as 900x900px-LL-d350f49b_180805d1359746819-den-store-hodetelefontra-den-321452_495117173872042_1278125087_nwebsite maintenance becomes more and more less time consuming. It’s starting to become second nature every day that I do it.

So I’ve read some articles on Digital Legacy and one of the most important ways of securing that legacy is giving someone you trust a list of all your login information at the most important places that you roam. One of the examples they give is, say you have a great memory and you feel secure because all your passwords are memorized in your head. What if you should bang that head in an accident and your still able to heal up fine except for one part…the memory becomes dodgy, then what would you do. I know a lot of people have software that secures all your passwords in one place with one login key to access them all. So I guess this writeup does not apply to you.

I don’t mean to get all psychological on your ass but even more than login access is that 900x900px-LL-d474f278_Devil-1024x805over time we all begin to sort out our digital information in such a way that our machines can be like a virtual book on our lives. I’ve been working on this for sometime, since I’m probably never going to write a book on my life, I think it would be pretty cool if my younger relatives would have a whole history of my life in digital form. They could watch all the best movies and listen to all the best music that I have compiled for myself. I know that’s pretentious to say that my music is “Good” music but let’s face it  the music the youth listen to today can be lacking in substance. Please do not confuse that comment with my saying that there is no good music out there, that could not be further from the truth. There is lot’s of good, really so much freaking music out there (Good and bad), but if you have ADHD like me sorting out the good from the bad can make me at times want to stick a pencil through my eye socket straight into my skull /sarcasm.

I know when I was young I would listen to only one type of music and then I would hear 900x900px-LL-cd32f308_1headphonesZeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, John Coltrane, Paul Oakenfold, and Danny Howells….a whole new world would open up to me, for music and cinema,  I did not like at the start. At some point the “oh yeah, I get it now” factor would kick in. Now I’ll just as soon listen to Cinderella as I would Django Reinhardt. I give anything a try now and my musical knowledge is all the better for it…I hope that they will experience these type of “enlightening moments” that I had even if it’s not with my music.

So do what you will with my odd ramblings…It’s something that I think about, maybe at some point it will happen for you as well, maybe not. Anyway I still have to round up 900x900px-LL-d3e145c5_2dfd588d-2e10-44b8-adf8-0d41dfc2424f_largethousands of information logins so that someone can make some damn sense of my mess. I guess that will be such a task that maybe it will never happen and all they’ll have is some food porn and a million crazy .gif’s from tumblr. Oh well at least I can say I tried.

Thanks for reading and again for all your support!

Bless Bless!
