So I just got off the phone with a relative visiting Los Angeles, and I ask, where have they gone…”We’ve been to Venice Beach, Santa Monica, yada yada, and Disneyland in Anaheim. We’ve been very busy, tomorrow we head to San Diego where we will be able to relax a bit more.” I replied, “Awesome…what about the Sunset Strip, how did you like that?” I remember when I went to California for my first time…I had a local take me to see the sites, and when I brought up that I wanted to go to the strip, she said…’there’s not really much there, but I get it, we can make a stop there so you can check it out.’ I get it many locals will say that it’s a dirty waste of time. Not me, I thought, I was on a pilgrimage and if I did not experience anything other than “The Strip” that would be fine. I also get that it’s very touristy…I did not care it was the 1980’s and I had to go. So anyway my relative on the phone today  says, they did not go to 346462hjSunset, and they would not have a chance. It was like a knife in my chest…WHATTTTT!!! At least do a drive through, WTF! So much amazing history but I guess it’s not to be. I know some of you are saying F Sunset, dirty waste of time…WRONG!

All I could think of to myself is that some day they will regret not going to the strip, just to see The Rainbow, The Whiskey, and The Troubabour. It reminded me of my first trip to Continental Europe with my Grand Parents when they took us on the “safety tour” in the 80’s when I was young, God love em, but I remembered that they tried to censor our trip. I grew up in Iceland so debauchery was not new to me, but the grandparents were a bit naive and did not get that we, the young ones already experienced the “adult stuff”. My uncle, aunt, and cousins lived near Nijmegen, Holland. It was pretty awesome experiencing it like a local…riding the bike paths in and out of the city and the 10 miles from Beuningen to Arnhem. We had Fritz Met, fries Old Skool 377 Holland - CopyEditand mayonnaise, had to explain what the American word “Cool” to a local (It did not mean cold), and were hit with major porn next to the Disney Movies at the “Video Ring” while renting VHS tapes. As you know women’s breasts on TV, on the front page of the newspaper, and at the beach is normal in Europe.

We ate horse meat burgers (salty strange), canned hot dogs, and dairy products like eggs / butter / and unpasteurized fresh milk not refrigerated. Actually reminded me of Iceland, not the same, but eating strange foods that is. Remember there was no Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern on TV then and wandering gastronomy was not popular with Americans…still is not, but people “get” foi gras now even if they don’t want to eat it themselves.  Now I know better to go for the Pig Cheek and Tuna Collar…first! Thank you Mr. Bourdain.

I also went to a Dutch school with my cousin and a friend of his, and all the students were asking me all kinds of questions about celebrities (blech!) and MTV (remember it was the 80’s). It wasn’t all bad, in fact I had a great time in English class. Everyone in Holland had English class in school, what was really cool was when I listened to the kids speaking English (Very fluent by the way), I realized they were learning British English. When they asked me to read a passage in their class book everyone seemed amazed and were stunned that I did not have an Icelandic accent. American English I found out that day was quite different from UK English.

Anyway I did not accept the idea of a censored Europe, no matter what they did (Much more on that later in this piece, see the plane ride home)…I spent my free days to do whatever I wanted, on my own wisely. I knew what I was looking for and I was going to take advantage of it, no matter what anyone said. We drove to Paris and I remember my Grandparents rushing us by the nude statues…very silly indeed, could not be avoided in The Louvre. Also all the sex shops near the Moulin Rouge was awkward for them…lol. We also went to East Germany, this was before the wall came down, and it was quite sad. Far from the free East Berlin Berghain / Panoramabar lawlessness I would visit several years ago, totally not like I remembered in a great way. We further went to Antwerp Belgium, Amsterdam NL (All Over NL), Berlin DE, Luxembourg, and Zurich Switzerland.  It was a very fun trip. 346346hg

I know now days seeing police dogs and Machine guns at airports is pretty common, but back then it was not.  You see we planned our trip months ahead and found ourselves in Holland with military fighter jets doing mission test runs above the house. We turned on the radio and in Dutch, they were saying America was on the brink of w*ar after blo*wing up one  of K*had*afi’s homes, kil*ling his s*on. It was pretty scary for a while we did not know what was going to happen day to day. Would we be taking our scheduled flight a few weeks later from Brussels to the US. We thought about leaving early, thankfully we did not as everything seemed to settle down when it was time to leave.

So as I said I was not going to allow a censored tour of europe, I was a young kid but had been around the block a few times. So I was worried about customs searching my bags especially with all I had acquired on my trip…unknowingly by my Grandparents and with the heightened security. My collectables in my luggage were; several Cuban Cigars, a bottle of cheap French Drinking Wine that all the locals in Paris drank at lunchtime with their bread and fromage, 1 bottle of Russian Potato Vodka, 1 bottle of REAL Czechoslovakian Absinthe, 1 Switchblade, 1 pen…woman with disappearing dress, 1 pack of Po*rn Star Playing Cards, and there was more but you get the idea. I was not even a teen yet and I was a walking ball of debauchery to go, just add water. It was that Heavy Metal music, it was a bad influence on me…I’ll blame it on that. K.

So we get to the airport in Brussels and began to put our luggage on the conveyor to the x-ray. As it went through I could have pissed myself. Breathe! As soon as my bag came through I picked it up and hustled it away about 30 feet to the bottom of the escalators. I grabbed another bag of my family’s as well. Then all of a sudden there was a commotion behind the scanner and two airport officials come out from behind and start pulling my Grandmother’s bag apart, obviously looking for something. They found nothing as my bag was safely away. Ah to be young again, man was I a handful. That was very close…very very close! Imagine them unpacking my suitcase full of treats right in front of my stunned Grandparents?!?! Anyway I passed through customs and on arrival in the US scuttled without even a search or declaration form in the US. As I walked by inspectors they paid me no attention as I tried to steady my bag, the bottles had come unwrapped and were now clinking. I almost shat myself…steady hand!

More to come about my trips to Continental Europe in the future, time to get back to music, Los Angeles, and Seattle. Forward a few years…Now it was the late 80’s, but I had travelled to LA in 83, 85, 88 and 89 and I did not establish my connections in the music industry until the middle of 1989. I thought to myself, I had missed out on Hendrix and the 60’s scene, as well as the Punk Movement in the 70’s (single digits, although I saw the 44633363mjRamones in 83 but that does not count, right, as I missed the movement). So I had to go to LA for the 80’s Glam Metal Scene…the Sunset strip was insane. The freaks were out and dressed to kill, it was more than you would imagine, the smell of Aqua Net and Phunky Kush was overwhelming. I got to see almost all of the LA Metal bands as there were shows every night of the week. It was a pretty carefree time as I was traveling back and forth between the UK, Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, and Seattle quite often. There were also many side trips to Vegas and Frisco as well. In the future I would find myself living between the UK, Reykjavik, Boston, San Diego, and San Francisco between tours in the 90’s. What made it even more amazing was that I was able to physically see the major turn in the music industry from LA Glam to The Seattle Sound.

When I look back on it, it was a seismic shift but as I just liked loud music I transitioned easily from Motley Crue and Ratt to Alice In Chains and Nirvana. I did not give a fuck about the politics and I got along with almost anybody, so at the time I did not notice the music was too different, of course it was different, but more importantly I could feel that I was part of something very unique and a part of history. What made everything more confusing was that Guns N’ Roses, Janes Addiction, and The Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s holding it up for LA blurring the Alternative lines. Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer (The Big Four) where holding things up for thrash in the US and even bigger in Europe and South America. I would just the same listen to LA Guns, Mudhoney, or Megadeth (just as I do today)…where I really noticed the transition was when I went back home to work in the clubs in the 90’s.  All the work shifted from LA to Seattle for sure but back home Glam Metal was out and “Grunge” (hate that term) was in at some point. I didn’t get the memo that Metal was out and Seattle was in. I just went with the flow. The difference at home was the radio had stopped playing 80’s metal and full rotation was set on Seattle, it was really strange. Instead of taking my flights to LAX, I was now heading for SEATAC. That’s just the way it was. Not Enough time to write about the Raves and The Grateful Dead, Old Skool Rap Shows ( Notorious BIG, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Warren G, NWA, Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan, KRS 1, Dr. Dre, etc.) that’s for other articles…I was going nonstop for sure!

My experiences during these times are just beginning to be published, every day still I remember a new adventure and make note to be sure I remember to write about it here. “Bastard Saint” the Series has turned into something bigger. A book about all my experiences set to a bizarre ethereal netherworld. Based on a true story…there is so much to it, I will be posting excerpts from it in the New Year of 2015. Sorry, much later than I had expected because I want to give everybody a taste of how the book is coming along and the characters within, without giving away everything in a few posts. However I will probably self publish and give it away for free. So I look to give everyone here pieces to wet the tongue, while leaving people wanting to see development and progress with the full text.

So in closing here I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and Happy Holidays! Have a drink and a toke on me…I’ll be sticking with my coffee, Ettan, and Skruf Xtra Stark with a little Thunder Ultra Raspberry / Thunder Frosted, Oden’s Kanel, Gotlandskt Julesnus to keep it real for the season! Real Swedish Imported Snus Taxes Paid(Med Smak Av Jul !)….not that American SNUS Shit!

Reviews for individual albums or sets will be posted HERE (The Main “DAY” Page) but 3755fdaily Videos & Playlists will be posted in the Playlist “Night” Feed Blog. Again you can access it from the “Playlist “Night” Feed” button in the header menu below the “HOME” button. Or you can get there using the links below.

Note: If you look under a specific name in the categories to the right….for example say “John Lennon” and see what is archived under that name, you should always check the band members’ full band name as well…i.e “The Beatles”. The reason is that at first when I made the two websites, I just used band names. In the last 2 months I began to add individual band members names. So If you look under “John Lennon” there may be a lot more Posts about him, obviously under “The Beatles”. This can be done for all individual band members and their bands at both the “Day” and “Night” “Pages”, as there may be different content at each. Search function also works well…but you must search at both the “Day” and “Night” Pages separately. I know it’s a little confusing but if you search around you’ll find everything we have here. 😉

How I Fell In Love With My Guilty Pleasure, America Via The U.K…

Today Up On Christmachine Audio Reference Music Server :

In the 90’s I spent most of my time living between California, Boston, Iceland, and England. It was an amazing time as I would take short trips around the world between tours as well 900x900px-LL-a067d71FLPas hit up as many festivals and shows, representing all types of music. During this time I was touring with rock bands and on the side was living the life on the Electronic Music Train. I was really into Techno, early Trance, Happy Hardcore, Drum and Bass, and Jungle…which I had already experienced in the US underground but was taking things to a whole new level in the UK and Europe, as it was already huge there in popular culture. It would not hit big in the US for another 2 decades, and it was magical period as I have already said.

During the decade I was fortunate to attend festivals such as the Notting Hill Carnival, Reading, Glastonbury, Love Parade, I Love Techno, Gatecrasher, and Sonar / Clubs and Illegal raves featuring Carl Cox, John Digweed and Sasha, such as Shelly’s and Renaissance and finishing out the Decade with Oakenfold’s residencies at Cream and Home. It was quite a blur but one thing that was interesting beyond laying some of the groundwork for all that dance music is today, It was the drug gangs. I had encountered it in the US quite often but in the UK clubs were always getting shut down due to rival drug gangs shootouts during party’s, fighting over territory.

The music was absolutely insane, The Prodigy was a huge act at the time as where the Chemical Brothers (At that time known as the Dust Brothers). The scene was very intense and new, the danger even adding to the excitement. Something else notable from the time was, I remember people telling me that dance nights were not to be referred to as “Raves”. All the cool people referred to them as “Parties”, if you said raves you were considered not in the know. Funny an silly that! You had to be in the know at the time because there was little internet, it was not usually till the day…even short as a few hours before, where the location of the party would be released and spread like wildfire from person to person throughout the country (outside of the clubs and festivals that is).

Besides all the powerful chemicals that were making the rounds, my three favorite things that I Loved about England was I could walk into any pharmacy and buy amazing purple flavoured codeine cough syrup that did not contain any other health damaging drugs like paracetamol/ tylenol (APAP) or Ibuprofin (NSAIDS). Straight up codeine with one added benefit it was in a liquid suspension with Chloroform as a stabilizer solvent, so every time you took a drink (known as Sizzurp/ today with Promethazine in the US today) you could inhale the gas every time you opened the bottle and gave you a Nitrous type high. Every time you twist the cap it would sound like it does opening a beer and that was glorious gas. My other two things that I loved every day was something called “Squash” it is a 900x900px-LL-47e2d2b3_photo3-3concentrated form of juice and my favorite was a “berry current drink” called “Ribena”. Ribena was perfect with the codeine. The last thing was a high dose orange flavoured vitamin fizzy tablet (Dropped in water) called “Berrocca” (Hangover helper). My goodness us Americans do not know what we’re missing as we did not have the availability of these amazing products. I would stuff my suitcase full of these three things to bring back to the US…wunderbar!

Anyhow the reason I started with all that was to set the scene as to my mind frame and environment at that time, but in this foreign bliss I would come to find my guilty pleasure by accident and it was an American export that I would come to love in the Lakes District of North England. An unlikely place to find and fall in love with an American product.

So at the time I would frequent any independent music stores off the beaten path in places like Carlisle, Windermere, Whitehaven, and Maryport, to find any used electronic CD’s and I was able to get quite a collection. One time however I walked into such a store in Co*ckermouth and as I was browsing I noticed the owner was on old geezer playing vinyl on his turntable. Nothing strange there as vinyl was still popular in the UK. At some point a most heavenly music touched my soul and pricked my ears to stop what I was doing and listen. It was the voice…the voice was so heavenly, gripping, and vulnerable. The melody was something as well as it reached deep into my soul. After listening for a few minutes I called over the used record bins to the owner and asked him, “Who is this you’re playing, 900x900px-LL-bd404d07_1800-1366x768this record.” He looked at me funny, I’ll never forget that look, “It’s The Carpenters.” At that moment I thought my head was going to explode…I hated The Carpenters. WTF! I kept listening and at some point he changed the record…I did not ever remember hearing a Carpenters song and liking it. I even thought I knew the sound of Karen’s voice, how could I not know who that was…I know The Carpenters.

Anyway I was still stunned, and I bought a great BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix Release CD with mixes from Carl Cox, Pete Tong, and Judge Jules, then left the store. I emphasize that I was so stunned because I usually would ask the name of the song and the name of the record so I could get a hold of it later. I remember the moment so well for some reason, I thought to myself I’ll figure it out when I get home, what that song was. How hard would it be to find that song again, my parents had some Carpenters CD’s. So a few times over the years I would listen to The Carpenters to try and find that song. I went through all the vinyl rips and CD’s of theirs and over time I really fell in love with their music though at times it was very camp…I still fell in love with it.

No matter where I looked, through their whole catalog, I could not find that song. Karen Carpenters voice was so haunting and enveloped me and I became a fanatic. I liked them even more when I saw video and read their story of how Karen was playing the drums on the albums…she was also a bad ass musician. WTF! The reason why she often did not play drums live, like she wanted to, was because the record companies forbade it because they thought women should not be seen playing the drums. WTF! Karen was a 900x900px-LL-be611874_G5309-11a-headphone-type-lbb-3012-1970-500x442kick ass drum player while she sang like a tortured angel. Sorry for focussing on Karen, Richard, but it’s time someone said something to end the thought of The carpenters being uncool. I am ending that right now here on my website. Next time you hear The carpenters think for yourself that the person singing is playing jazz fills on the drums. Yes your head will explode at the thought as well.

So not only is this a social commentary on the dangers of pigeonholing any type of music, but also the mantra for this website. That is in essence why I’ll post about Slayer next to Diplo next to the Carpenters because good music is good music. If you do not like one thing talked about here, wait a minute and the next article, video, or playlist will have something you like. I’ve had people 900x900px-LL-c4e14c72_sunset2leave this site never to return because I write about a metal band and all their into at the moment is EDM. I’m asking everyone to keep an open mind and listen to new things. All of the music we listen to has roots in all that came before it.

The Carpenters story is pretty sad and amazing at the same time. It is our history as well. The Carpenters also have the distinction of having the only song ever that I have not been able to pin down after listening to it. What I would give to have Shazam at the time. I can live with never finding it because music as you know should be the continual search for the best, that which knocks you off your feet. That which is an eternal greatness that you think you continually reach, always left wanting. Always, never satisfied and always wanting more, yet never reaching that which is perfection. As we all know, nothing in our world ever reaches absolute perfection and that is what makes this journey all it’s worth.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers and Bless Bless!

The Good and Bad Of Better Living Through Chemistry…

Today Up On Christmachine Audio Reference Music Server :

There is no doubt that chemistry has not only extended the life of the species, but also made our daily lives more comfortable as we can often reach for what ails ye. 1Indigestion…gone. Headache…gone. Euphoria…yes please. K hole…not again. Whether your baking a cake or using a cold water extraction to isolate opiods your following steps that have an absolute numerical basis and a method of characteristics that are a direct outcome of a chemical equation. If you take ordinary table salt and separate the sodium from the chlorine you turn savory into a deadly poison, combine two extremely flammable gasses Hydrogen and Oxygen in just the right proportions and you get the molecule for human survival, water.

Today the death of Alexander Shulgin was interesting because this man has affected our lives in so many ways, where most have never heard of him. The basis of his work was creating drug analogues through the use of a few precursors. Precursors are interesting because if you do not know, they are the simple chemicals often obtained 900x900px-LL-4efce433_20090505052538legally in their original form, which can be used to create illegal chemicals through a variety of  chemical reactions or recipes. Analogues were Dr. Shulgin’s specialty because he perfected the art of tweaking illegal drug chemistry into drugs that were not yet known, as any drug has to be classified and isolated before they can be made illegal. Then once that chemical tweak becomes illegal, tweak it over and over again creating thousands of different substances which can be ingested with different effects on the human body. Now remember that includes death. Mr. Shulgin made himself a guinea pig for all his never ending chemical tweaks while keeping an extensive journal of all his experiences and creating a whole lexicon of terms to describe the affect of these chemicals as he experienced them.

First the bad…many people have died using these chemicals over the last half century. I could not look a person in the eye who has lost a loved one to one of these drugs, even 900x900px-LL-9cb65e52_femaleamazingartgirlsexyblack-25dedf94d7954543294cfab3e003614a_hthough the way they obtained and used the drug was like playing Russian Roulette, and say how wonderful it is to experience MDMA. Because the source of many drugs are from clandestine inexperienced home cooks and operations, many extremely dangerous adulterants and chemicals are left in the cook. These adulterants are in essence poisonous, containing chemicals that have unknown side effects from person to person. In essence all drugs are poisons, but it’s the dosage window that changes from chemical to chemical, and where one dosage creates extreme euphoria it’s often possible a slightly larger dosage can instantly kill.

The example of the bastardization of Dr. Shulgin’s work has been seen recently in drugs such as spice and bath salts, but it’s just the method of creating these drugs not the specific drugs themselves popularized by Shulgin. I don’t think it would be going out on a limb to say that Dr. Shulgin probably knew these people are extremely irresponsible in their means to an end. The problem as chemists 900x900px-LL-39c0b49d_477d7d4eea911continue to tweak dangerous chemicals to evade the law, no one knows what they are really taking even from dose to dose which is quite frightening.

Now for a good example…Ecstasy in the late 80’s and 90’s created an upheaval in popular culture and integration, in effect shaping our history for the good of humanity. When X landed en mass  in Europe, especially the United Kingdom a phenomenon occurred that was striking, hundreds of thousands of people who where divided into many different groups that normally would not associate with each other, began coming together at massive raves throughout the UK. Especially in England spontaneous illegal dance parties would break out in different areas of the countryside, really the first flash mobs but with X and Acid. These early raves would shut down the motorways and whole areas of the country with hundreds of thousands of people just spontaneously partying to a sound system and DJ’s and by the time the authorities could shut it down the party had already happened.

Everyone who has taken the X in a pure form knows why it is also known as “The Love Drug”. it is seen as the perfect integration of 900x900px-LL-44d7ed8d_28420255e5cf495c9dcc2c3030396ddfthe sustained euphoria seen from Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and LSD all in one pill…users are driven with an inclination to hug one another. Yes frat boys and goths hugging and probing each other ferociously in the middle of a field in the Lake District of Cumbria Northern England. All the while gurning with gnashing teeth and extremely sore jaws, which is where the pacifiers and lollies come in. As I say welcome to mars!

I’m not going to get into depth about the undesirable side affects after use because you either know or can look it up yourself. I also am not advocating any kind of drug use in this writeup. Take great care, get a test kit, and tread lightly. So as all kinds of drugs enhance all our lives we can take the positive in knowing that a lot of the prescription and over the counter drugs were created out of removing the side effects from dangerous substances and isolating the desired qualities that help us to live better through chemistry.
